Freelance Writing – Time Management Tips That Will Help You Make More Money

If there’s anyone who needs to master time management it’s the full-time freelance writer. Here are some time management tips from seasoned pros. Follow these tips and start earning more money now!

1) Don’t take on too many small writing projects that pay peanuts. Many beginning writers take on a slew of jobs, like writing daily blog entries for companies that pay $7.00 per post, or short articles that pay only about $20.00 for a 400-500 word piece. These kinds of projects SOUND like a good idea. They can be finished quickly, and, if a writer can manage to acquire enough of these types of jobs, he/she can generate a steady income of cash. But the problem is, these small projects tend to eat up more time than you think, leaving you with less time to do the projects that will bring in substantial income.

Instead of taking on a bunch of these tiny jobs, try this. Plan out how much money you’d like to make from writing each month. Then, get to work finding a few jobs that will produce that amount of income. An article for a glossy magazine might pay $1.00 a word. If you manage to get an assigned article of 1,000 words, then you’ve got $1,000 of income from that one project alone.

Once you get good at cranking out quality articles and have established relationships with several magazine editors who will give you regular assignments, you could even write two to three magazine pieces a month, earning between $2,000 and $3,000 just for those articles.

True, it will take time to build relationships with magazine editors, but wouldn’t you rather be working on developing those relationships through thoughtful queries and articles rather than writing for peanuts all day, knowing you’ll NEVER earn more from that type of work?

2) Find multiple uses for many (if not most) of the things you write. For example, turn one of your blog posts into an article for an article directory. Later, combine several of these articles to make a free e-book to give away at your site when subscribers join your mailing list (and all writers need a mailing list). Also, reslant and rewrite each of your articles for submission to more than one market.

3) Phone calls can really cut into your writing time. If you’re researching an article and need to make phone calls to contact expert sources for this piece, plan to make all the calls in a single day. Then, once you’ve made the calls, you’ll have all the resource material you need to start writing the article.

If you don’t make all the calls in a single day you could be on and off the phone for days, working on ONLY this one article. Also, to make the most of your phone time, email editors ahead of time to arrange a time for your call. That way, you’ll know for certain that your source can talk to you at the time you call (so you won’t have call-backs to make because the source wasn’t in the office when you phoned).

4) Develop a weekly marketing plan to keep the work flowing in week after week. Freelance writers need to be writing (on assignment) or looking for writing work (assignments ) all the time, so it’s important to create a weekly marketing plan in addition to working on assigned pieces.

5) You don’t have to reinvent the wheel with every nonfiction article you write. Look at the types of articles in major magazines these days. The titles for many of these pieces include a number like, “The Top Ten Ways to Save Money on Your Phone Bill,” or “A Dozen Ways to Cut Costs and Still Have the Wedding of Your Dreams,” and the article is simply a list of information. Create articles using a “list” type format like these. Not only are they quick and easy to write, but editors love this sort of thing.

6) Make use of your prime time. If you write best in the morning, before the phone starts to ring and you have other distractions and begin to get tired, do your most important writing at that time of day. Leave the afternoons for invoicing clients, returning phone calls, etc.

7) If you’re working on a fiction or nonfiction book, just write 2 pages a day. After you’ve written the 2 pages for the day, you can continue writing more pages, or move on to something else that day. If you manage to write more than 2 pages in a day, you’ll know you had a super productive day. Yet, if all you manage to write is 2 pages a day, you’ll still feel successful.

8) For nonfiction – get good at chunking out the work before you actually start writing. Come up with a catchy title, a great lead, then an outline. Do all that ahead of time and the article will be much faster to write by the time you do start writing it.

9) Plan a writing session with another writer. You don’t have to actually meet and write together. Just set a time frame – say from 9:00 to 11:00 tomorrow morning – when you will both plan to write. At 11:00, email or call each other to report your writing progress.

10) Allow yourself a specific amount of time for online activities like checking email, posting to your blog, playing computer games, and stick to ONLY those times. You’ll get more work done during the day, plus you won’t feel guilty once you do get online to check your email, play solitaire, etc.

Follow these ten tips and it won’t be long before you have plenty of time during the day to get your writing done, plus you should be making more money than ever!

Training Your Dog 101: Basic Commands

Obedience training can be tedious, but with the right tools, techniques, and patience, you and your dog should be able to succeed without any difficulty. These training sessions will also help you two get to know each other. After all dogs, like people, have their own personalities.

There is always the option of taking your dog to a professional trainer, who can be found at local pet stores, or you can find a specialised dog-training centre near your area. However, if you choose to train at home, there are some general rules to follow during your obedience training sessions and when you are not actively training your dog.

Focus on positive reinforcement. This means eliminating the word “no” from your vocabulary when your dog does something bad and do not try to abolish behaviours that just need an outlet. In obedience training, positive reinforcement means that you give your dog praise and rewards when he does something “right”. Reinforcing commands will help him remember what kinds of behaviours you find acceptable.

Use a normal tone of voice when giving him a command. Your dog’s hearing is unique and astute. If you use a callous tone of voice, he will think that he is “trouble”. Use the tone that you would normally use when commanding him to sit on any regular day.

Remember that dogs are social animals. That means regular interactions with you and other dogs as well. Playing with your dog after an obedience training session will allow both of you to bond, which happen to be another form of positive reinforcement. He will want to do good deeds and please you because he sees you as an “alpha” or a leader.

Obedience training also requires a lot of patience. After you’ve been training for a while, you should try to start get in the habit of only giving a command once. If your dog obeys, then reward him, and if he doesn’t, then move on to something else.

There are basic “tricks” and behaviours that every dog should know in order to have a happy, in-home relationship with you and your family; sit, down, stay, come, and heel. When teaching your dog these tricks in obedience training, make sure to use plenty of rewards and praises. Potty training your dog is another important behaviour that needs to be learned and will take more patience than other commands.

During obedience training sessions, say the command and hold the treat in front of his face while helping him (gently) perform the action. Start small (with the commands “sit” and “stay”). Once those two commands are perfected, increase the distance between you and your dog when giving the command. After that is accomplished, you can move on to different tricks and behaviour expectations.

Texas Schools See Increase in Number of AP Exams Taken and Improved Results

The Texas schools released figures in September 2006, showing substantial increases in the number of Texas schools students taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams, as well as their resulting scores.

High schools across the nation are allowed to teach college-level coursework that is first approved by the College Board, the national administrator of the AP exams. Under current rules, a high school need only sign a form promising to teach the specific curriculum for any class to be designated AP.

When Texas schools students take and pass an AP exam with a high enough score, they receive college credit for the course, which they will not have to take when they attend college. Not only does this allow college-bound students to take fewer courses in college to fulfill their degree requirements, but it also means that they and their parents save money on the cost of college tuition.

Many Texas schools districts see this as a win-win situation that encourages students and provides incentives for them to attend college after graduating high school. Here is some of the information released by the Texas schools:

o The number of high school students in the Texas schools that took AP exams increased from 80,240 in 2002 to 122,969 in 2006 — more than a 50 percent increase;

o The number of Texas schools students, who scored high enough to earn college credit in 2006, increased by more than 40 percent from 2002;

o There was a total of 224,168 tests taken in 2006 and 49 percent of these scores were three or higher — this is a slight drop from the 53 percent of three of higher scores in 2002;

o English language, English literature, and U.S. history remain the most popular of the 35 AP exams available; and

o Italian, Latin literature, French literature, microeconomics, and physics of electricity and magnetism were the least popular.

To encourage students to participate in AP coursework, as well as to take and pass the exams, many Texas schools districts provide cash incentives to both their students and teachers. They partner with nonprofit donor organizations or use foundation grants to fund their AP incentives. Some students and teachers earn from $100 to $300 for each exam passed. The incentives must work, since all of the schools using them have seen a dramatic increase in the number of students taking and passing the exams. Galveston’s Ball High School, for example, expects to receive $15,800 this year in student-earned incentives.

The Texas schools attributed their improved results for 2006 to the cash incentives, incentives to reduce exam costs for students (up to $80 for each exam), increased teacher training, and the overall push by the Texas schools to create a college-bound culture within their high schools.

Qualified Personnel in General Education

Because of the lack of specialized resources and the scarcity of qualified personnel in general education, it has been suggested that districts with significant ELL enrollment will likely place these students in special education; in fact, research conducted in California by Alfredo Artiles, Robert Rueda, Jesús Salazar, and Ignacio Higareda suggests that English language learners (ELLs) are disproportionately placed in disability programs.

Historically, the so-called subjective disabilities have been overpopulated at the national level by ethnic minority students, particularly African American and American Indian learners, as explained by Suzanne Donovan and Christopher Cross. These categories include learning disabilities (LD), mild mental retardation (MMR), and emotional/behavioral disorders (E/BD). ELL overrepresentation has been reported in the past two decades, as Alba Ortiz and James Yates report in their chapter in English Language Learners With Special Needs.

It is interesting that although general educators may be using disability diagnoses as a means to cope with the aforementioned contemporary reforms, special education is transforming its identity as a result of the inclusive education movement and preventive approaches. Indeed, more students with disabilities are being educated in general education classrooms, though it has been reported by Daniel Losen and Gary Orfield that ethnic minority students are placed in more segregated settings than are their White counterparts. In turn, preventive models such as “response to intervention” (RTI) promise to identify and treat early (i.e., while the student is still in a general education environment).

These new trends are creating unique and unprecedented conditions for the education of ELLs. This entry addresses the legal background of the special education programs geared toward culturally and linguistically diverse students designated as ELLs and the implications for assessment, curriculum planning, and the nature of inclusive education programs for those students.

Once you know, then you can figure out what certificates and/or degrees are needed to advance. It’s not just all about making tons of money, you’ll never be truly successful and happy if you don’t love what you do. So make sure you are prepared, and then check out Unisa Short Courses to help you expand your career!

Those Important College Essays

Chief among the most important things on your college application check list is the application essay. Students are typically asked to write a self-reflective, personal, descriptive essay, that is supposed to describe who they are. Oh–and it also has to be technically perfect, too. This is a big deal! Colleges use a student’s essay to tell a great deal about them, such as how well they can write, what their thought process is like, and whether they’d fit in well with the college. Each college has unique questions–usually several different topics that they give, which they ask a student to write about. The ultimate question colleges are asking within these essay questions is, “Why should we admit you?”

When you realize that the average student applies to six different colleges, and writes approximately three essays for each college, you’ll quickly see that there just isn’t enough time in the day to write all those essays! When they’re in 10th grade, you think your children are just as busy as they could ever possibly be, but they actually get busier and busier in 11th and 12th grade, and it gets more and more difficult for them to get through the process of college application essays. That’s why it’s important to learn how to reduce, reuse and recycle your essays, so that you can do as little writing as possible in order to get this job done.

The big problem, of course, is that a self-reflective, technically perfect, descriptive essay can be a completely overwhelming assignment for teenagers. It can even be overwhelming for an adult to create a technically perfect essay. I have two boys who are not known for being self-reflective, and it was most challenging for them. One of my children doesn’t really enjoy writing and certainly doesn’t enjoy writing about feelings. He doesn’t mind so much writing about science, engineering, or chess, but writing down feelings is certainly overwhelming, and can be a difficult task. It’s important that we, as parents, understand that it can be difficult for children to do this sort of assignment; so writing them one at a time is better.

Fortunately, college topic questions often overlap significantly. If you have the option, you can carefully choose which topics you write about, and reuse the same essay for multiple college applications. This will help you significantly cut back on how much you must write. An easy way to do this is to lay out all the questions from the colleges you’re interested in, and find which ones are similar enough that you could write one essay to be used for both (or more) of them. This planning ahead will save you time, energy, and arguing with your teen! It’s a good idea to have another person review the essay too, so that it’s ‘technically perfect’ before you send it off to the colleges.

College preparation takes a lot of time, but if you put careful thought and energy into the process, it will pay off with college admittance, and hopefully some great scholarships too!

How to Create a Monthly Coaching Business in 30 Days or Less

In this article, I am going to lay out my entire simple plan for creating a coaching business from scratch, in 30 days or less, using article marketing as your marketing base, using your own expertise as your knowledge base, and using my proprietary system of fast coaching program creation “on the fly” as your coaching model.

Note: I have never revealed all of these details to the general public, I normally reserve this information for my highest level Platinum coaching clients. Why am I revealing this now to you?

Because I want to see you succeed. You see, this year has been tough financially for a lot of people, especially entrepreneurs and people who have service oriented businesses. And the thing is, I know exactly what to do and how to do it to help those entrepreneurs break free and create their own coaching program fast, by ignoring many of the “rules” others have created about coaching programs. And until now I have only shared these steps with a few people.

But I feel as though by not sharing it with more people, with many more people, I am holding you back. So I want to stop the madness, and start enabling you to have the same success I do by coaching others, simply and easily.

And let me tell you this. It’s not hard. Many gurus and coaches make this hard. They make it sound like it is a lot of work to create a coaching program. And the way they do it, it is. But let me tell you this, my first coaching program…I thought of it, asked my subscribers what they wanted it to look like and include, launched it, and enrolled 22 clients – in about 2 weeks start to finish. And each week I created a lesson for them. It was really easy the way I did it.

And in today’s article, I am going to show you how to do it yourself, from scratch.

Obviously, if you already have some things in place, then you are a step up already. Like if you have subscribers, buyers, etc.. But I am going to write this from the perspective of starting from scratch, you can simply go faster if you already have some things in place.

Here’s the plan:

I am going to give you the background first, then I will give you the step by step details.

Background:

You are going to quickly build a list of subscribers who perceive you as the right expert for them, to teach them what they need to know.

Then you are going to launch to them a simple coaching program that meets their needs, is easy for you to deliver, and creates monthly coaching revenue for you.

Here is an example – let’s assume a $500 per month coaching program. You enroll 5 people per month. There is a bit of a snowball effect that happens.

First month: 5 clients – $2500 per month.

Second month: add 5 more – total 10 clients: $5000

Third month, add 5 more – total 15 clients: $7500

Each month you add more clients.

Of course, some months you add more than others. Some months a client or two might drop out. But the idea is that your income grows each month. If you charge more for coaching than $500 per month, and sign more clients, it happens faster. If you charge less than $500 per month, or sign less than 5 new clients per month it grows slower. But all in all, the idea is that each month you add more guaranteed monthly revenue than the month before.

Do you like this model?

If not, the rest of this article is not for you.

Just close this page.

But…if you like this model…keep reading…because I can teach you exactly how to do it.

Here’s how:

You MUST have a squeeze page to create a subscriber list. You cannot sell a coaching program the way I teach to a cold market. That means you MUST build a list of subscribers with whom you can build trust and relationship. Create a 10 day credibility campaign where you send an email a day out to your list, not selling anything, just building trust and credibility.

You will write about 10 articles per day to create traffic. This is easy to do if you do it like I do. Many clients when they start with me they tell me it takes them 3-4 hours to write one article. I change that fast, you cannot write 10 articles per day if it takes you 3-4 hours to write one article. Instead, you must write one article every 15 minutes, then 10 articles takes 2.5 hours per day. And this is the biggest part of this plan, so your total day is 2.5 hours writing articles,.25 hours submitting articles, then about 1/2 an hour doing everything else…so about 3.25 hours per day to build this business. There is no fluff in my model. Do only what I teach, don’t do a bunch of other things like reading tons of emails, studying YouTubes, Googling things, etc., they only burn time in your day. You don’t have time to burn if you want to have a full-scale coaching business in 30 days.

Here is how you write an article in 15 minutes:

Write a title – for example “How to Do xyz (your niche topic) (30 seconds)

Write the following paragraph:

In this article I am going to teach you how to do xyz. The reason I am going to teach you how to do xyz is because you need to know how to do xyz in order to be successful at abc. Here are the 3 steps I am going to teach you about how to do xyz: step one is xyz and blah blah blah. Step two is abc and blah blah blah. Step three is def and blah blah blah. If you do these three steps you will have success with xyz fast. (5 minutes)

Ready? Here are the steps:

(Note: that was exactly 100 words. Exactly. And it will be more for you because you will be spelling out xyz, abc, def, blah, blah blah. That might be 150 words!)

Back to the article:

Step one: write 75 words on how to do step one (that is about 3 sentences. Just tell them how to do it. Just like I am telling you how to do it. Simple. Keep this simple. Really simple. If you make this difficult, you won’t be able to accomplish this project in 30 days. But if you make this simple, like I teach, you can. (2 minutes)

Step two: write 75 words on how to do step two (2 minutes)

Step three: write 75 words on how to do step three. (2 minutes)

(Note: do you see how easy this is? Write 100-150 words introduction using my above formula. Then 3 steps of 75 words. That gives you about 30 words. That’s it. Really simple) (total time: 11 minutes 30 seconds)

Ok, back to the steps on how to create the coaching program:

Now that you are writing 10 articles per day, you should be getting about 10 subscribers per day. So after 30 days, you have 300 articles and 300 subscribers. At the end of your 10 day credibility campaign, you are going to send an email out that looks like this:

Dear subscriber,

I am in the process of creating a brand new coaching program to help you with xyz. But I want to make sure it is exactly what you need to help you with xyz. So I need your help.

What is your goal for the next 90 days with xyz?

What is the biggest thing holding you back from achieving your goal in 90 days?

By the way, if you respond personally in the next 24 hours, I will promise to personally respond back to you.

To your success,

Your Name

When they respond to the answer in 2) they will be telling you what they need to learn in your coaching program!

Then you are going to write a letter to all your subscribers telling them you have created a coaching program based on what they told you they need, and you are going to include everything everybody told you they needed.

And then they are going to sign up for your coaching program from your sales letter. Then some people won’t sign up because they have questions. So you are going to send another email out asking them if they have any questions before they sign up. And then some people will sign up after that. And so on. And of course each day you are adding 10 more subscribers to your list, and after 10 days on your list, each person starts getting these emails automatically. So each day you have 10 more prospects.

And of course notice that you haven’t created the coaching program until they tell you what they want, and then once they sign up, you create the first lesson based on what the first person needs. So you haven’t even created your coaching program until the first person signs up. Then one week later, you create your second lesson (by now you might have 5 people signed up). Each week you simply create one more lesson.

By the way, do you want to learn more details about each of these steps?

Good Career Choices – Maximize Your Chances of Making the Right Decision

Making good career choices is a complex process and requires careful planning. Most places in the developing world have witnessed a huge shift in the labour market recently. Although warnings that the job will soon be a thing of the past have been a little exaggerated, it’s now much more likely that everyone, irrespective of career, will move from job to job before they reach retirement age – and even afterwards, as more and more people struggle with finances as they get older. So, making bad choices is definitely something you want to avoid if possible. Having said that, finding your vocation is not an exact science, whether you are just starting out or embarking on a second career. So look at mistakes in a positive light – they can help you identify what you really do want to do and what you most definitely want to avoid!

So, what is the best way to go about making a career decision? Is it advisable to go after a post in an expanding market or should you stick to what you love doing? You can take the following steps to maximize your chances of securing an interesting job which gives you some measure of security in an uncertain world.

First of all, watch out for trends. With career change an inevitable part of life, this is becoming more and more important. Advances in technology are also leading to new jobs – careers you’d never have considered because they simply didn’t exist! So your ideal career may have just been invented. Or perhaps you can invent it yourself – increased flexibility in the workplace now allows individuals to work part-time or freelance more easily and this gives you the opportunity to create your own portfolio. So don’t discount the possibility of developing a new work style.

Next, you should think about training and education. Change is happening at a much faster rate than it did in the past and if you want to keep on top of your game, you need to be involved in lifelong learning, whether that means keeping up to date in your present industry or learning new skills which could help you find a post in another one.

Another good strategy is to develop expert status in your field. New developments and discoveries are happening in every field and the more you know about a subject, the better your chances of getting hired. You can narrow this down a little by focusing on one or two aspects of your area, particularly those in which demand is highest now or will be in the future. And of course, make sure that your computer skills are constantly updated. Most jobs involve computing these days and if you can add some extra relevant IT skills to your resume, you’ll open up more doors.

Don’t forget the element of job satisfaction. It’s really important that you enjoy what you are doing, or at least enjoy the majority of tasks you have to perform. Do you feel that it’s vital to be passionate about your work?
